Asteroid Day was established on December 3, 2014 with the relevant declaration signed by more than 100 astronauts, scientists and artists and is organized every year on June 30. The initiative belonged to the English astrophysicist Dr. Brian May, known to the general public for his musical performances as Queen guitarist, and the German director Gregory Richters.
The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the scientific community, the public, governments and charities, about the threat posed to Earth by asteroids and the need to protect our planet. Asteroids are small bodies in orbit around the Sun, one dimension of which is more than 50 meters (to distinguish them from meteorites) and less than 2,500 kilometers (to distinguish them from the planets), and their composition is mainly based on in silicon, carbon and iron (to distinguish them from comets). They are considered remnants of the formation of the Solar System and are estimated in millions.
June 30 was chosen to commemorate the "Tunguska Explosion", which occurred on June 30, 1908 in Siberia, when a celestial body (meteoroid or asteroid) caused the largest explosion in modern history. The energy released by the explosion was a thousand times greater than that of the bomb in Hiroshima.
