The celebration of World Archives Day aims at:

At the International Conference on Archives in Vienna in 2004, 2,000 participants adopted a resolution calling on the United Nations to establish an International Day Files. Some countries had already decided to have a national archives day to raise awareness among the general public and decision-makers about the importance of archives. At its 33rd session in Paris in 2005, the UNESCO General Conference declared October 27 as World Audiovisual Heritage Day.

This action was a remarkable initiative and created new incentives for the benefit of maintaining these records. In November 2007, the International Council on Archives, at its annual general meeting, decided to establish June 9 as International Archives Day. The choice of this date was not accidental: On June 9, 1948, the International Council of Archives was established under the auspices of UNESCO. Its first president was Charles Samaran, director general of the National Archives of France. The global archival community has embraced the institution of celebration and since then on this day a variety of events are organized by national and local archival bodies worldwide.
